Abstract:
Achatina fulica is a pest of vegetables, fruits, ornamentals and other commercial crops. It was recently found to damage several horticulture crops in Shimoga, Hiryur, Davanagere and Tumkur districts of Karnataka. An investigation was conducted on the banana plantation at Chikkanahalli, Sira Tq, Tumkur district. The farmers do not adopt control measures or use locally available materials like lime or salt to manage the pest. Different baits like papaya, banana, guava, tomato, cabbage and rice bran were evaluated to attract snails. Among these baits, ripen papaya and rice bran were found to be the most effective baits in attracting snails. The ripened papaya bait attracted 81033 snails after 4 hours. Cabbage bait was the least attractive, with 14.38 snails.
