Influence of FYM, vermicompost and inorganic fertilizers on the incidence of insect pests of soybean
Author: P.M. PRASANNA
Abstract:
The use of organic manures or their combination with fertilizers as tools of integrated pest management in soybean crops is an emerging field due to the popularity of organic products and the long-term sustainability of agriculture. The field experiment was conducted at the GKVK campus, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru. The soybean crop was raised under 12 treatments with organic manures like Farm yard manure (FYM) and vermicompost, in various combinations or alone. To know the impact of these treatments on the pest dynamics was observed by estimating the populations and damage by thrips, pod borer, and stem flies by standard sampling methods. Soil application of 50% of Rec. FYM (0.51 thrips/plant) recorded a significantly lower thrips population compared to other treatments except for control (0.81), Rec. vermicompost + Rec. fertilizer (0.79), and the package of practices (0.75) followed plots. The peak population of thrips was recorded on 47 DAG. Plants from 50 % rec. FYM + 50 % rec. Vermicompost-applied plots (6.24%) recorded significantly lower secondary tunnelling than control (11.07%). The test weight, number of pods, and grain yield were also variable among treatments, with the highest grain yield recorded from Rec. FYM + phorate + rec. Fertiliser (32.27 q/ha).
